Why would an atheist celebrate Christmas when they don't believe in it? And, wouldn't it just be about the presents and the food and isn't that kind of hollow?<br /><br />The thing is, though, I <em>love</em> Christmas and I like the religious bits at least as much as I like reindeer and parcels and puddings. A big part of it is that I believe that a story can have meaning and resonance without being literally true and the Christmas story really is a cracker. There's animals and kings and angels and an itty bitty baby who is going to go on to great things - what's not to like. It's a story that makes me reflect on being a family and about how we get chances to start over and how the humblest person just might change the world and the weight of potential that all babies bring with them. Those ideas have a Truth that stands outside of one story.<br /><br />The other thing I love about Christmas is the all the tradition that goes with it and the way that Christmas always holds the ghosts of Christmases past and present. The way Christmas happens for my boys isn't very different from the way it was when I was a girl and my childhood Christmases were built on the ones my Mother remembered and on back through time. When life is difficult and unpredictable it's reassuring to have something that is fixed and that reminds us that there have been good times before and there will be good times again. http://hungrymama.livejournal.com/116116.html contemplative public 1 http://hungrymama.livejournal.com/115877.html Wed, 09 Dec 2009 22:52:01 GMT http://hungrymama.livejournal.com/115877.html Despite my huge antisocial tendencies I seem to have been both going out and enjoying myself rather a lot lately.<br /><br />Jamie's work pulled out all the stops for their Christmas do this year providing us all with motels and babysitters in <a href="http://www.akaroa.com/fpnew/fastpage/fpengine.php/templateid/204">Akaroa</a> and took us on an evening harbour cruise. It was a perfect, sunny evening and there was bubbly and a rather nice dinner and four<a href="http://www.waynemunro.com/grw/wayne/2009/sli_xmas_function/IMG_8269.JPG/view_med_70.html"> hector's dolphins</a> (the world's smallest and cutest dolphins) which kept pace with the boat for a good fifteen minutes. I wore a <a href="http://www.waynemunro.com/grw/wayne/2009/sli_xmas_function/IMG_8403.JPG/view_med_70.html">purple dress</a> that I bought mainly because it reminded me of the one I wore to <span class='ljuser ljuser-name_ghetsuhm' lj:user='ghetsuhm' style='white-space: nowrap;'><a href='http://ghetsuhm.livejournal.com/profile'><img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif' alt='[info]' width='17' height='17' style='vertical-align: bottom; border: 0; padding-right: 1px;' /></a><a href='http://ghetsuhm.livejournal.com/'><b>ghetsuhm</b></a></span> 's engagement party in 1992. It was really good to have such a nice outing as it may well be Jamie's last ever staff do as an employee - he has secret plans and clever tricks for the new year.<br /><br />On Monday I went to the Christchurch launch of Emma Hart's <em>Not Safe for Work</em> and David Haywood's <em>The New Zealand Reserve Bank Annual 2010</em> both of which are fabulous books which you should buy, <a href="http://publicaddress.net/default,5406.sm">from here</a>, immediately if you haven't already done so. It took a stupid and surprising amount of courage to enter a room which largely contained old, dear friends and very interesting seeming new people but I'm very, very glad I did. "She made a bad choice" says Ferdi (who says little kids don't get the big stuff?) It's obvious they feel the loss keenly still (as do we all). I can manage, now, to put the grief and questions aside enough that life goes on more-or-less as normal. I'm even managing to be happy sometimes but it's an effort and the slightest thing - a sick pet or even just a thoughtless word, pushes me to where I can touch my breaking point.<br /><br />Ferdinand seems to be trying to cope by attempting to control absolutely everything else in his world. This presents some challenges.
